As the cold weather of winter finally gives way to the warmer temperatures and sunny days of spring, thoughts turn to one of America’s favorite pastimes: baseball. For the diehard fans, this means dusting off their team’s gear and eagerly awaiting the first game of the season. For others, it may simply mean enjoying a nice day at the ballpark with friends or family. However, for the athletes themselves, it means months of hard work and training in preparation for what lies ahead.

The St. Peter’s baseball team is no different. As they gear up for their upcoming season they do so with the same dedication and determination that they have always shown. Head Coach John McCarthy is entering his nineteenth season with the program and is looking to lead his team to another successful year.

“Our goal every year is to win a state championship ” said McCarthy. “We have a lot of returning players this year who we think can help us achieve that goal.”

One player who will be key to the team’s success is senior pitcher Alex Hernandez. Hernandez has been a starter for St. Peter’s since his sophomore year and has developed into one of the best pitchers in New Jersey. He has already committed to pitch at Fordham University next year, but he is focused on helping his team win a state championship before he heads off to college.

“I just want to go out there and do whatever I can to help my team win,” said Hernandez. “I know we have what it takes to win a state title, so I’m just going to go out there and compete every day.”

The St. Peter’s Baseball Team will open their season on March 28th against Immaculata High School McCarthy is confident in his team’s abilities and is looking forward to seeing them compete at the highest level

“We have a lot of talent on this team,” said McCarthy. “I think we’re going to surprise some people this year.”

St. Peter’s Baseball: A Closer Look at the Schedule

The St. Peter’s varsity baseball team has their first game of the season on Saturday, March 3 at home against Fordham Prep. The team is made up of seniors Matt Maione, Aidan Kirk, Liam Shevlin, and Matt Toner; juniors Eddie Zajchowski, Will Dignacco, Tommy O’Sullivan, Brad Devine, and Ryan McKenna; and sophomores Matt Cronin Sean Donohue, Kevin Lynch and John Dowling.

Pitching for the season will be led by seniors Matt Maione and Aidan Kirk. In the infield, senior Liam Shevlin will be playing first base with junior Brad Devine at second base.Junior Will Dignacco will be taking over at shortstop while senior Matt Toner mans third base. The outfield will see a mix of seniors and juniors with Zajchowski in left field McKenna in center field, and Kirk in right field.

The team’s goal is to return to the CHSAA Class A semifinals and avenge their loss to eventual city champions Xavier.

The St. Peter’s baseball team is off to a great start this season. With a record of 12-3, the team is currently ranked fifth in the state.

There are several players on the team who are having outstanding seasons and who are sure to be key contributors to the team’s success. Here are three players to keep an eye on:

First, there is junior catcher Joe Smith Smith is batting .333 so far this season and leads the team in home runs (5) and RBIs (16). He is a key leader on the team both on and off the field and has been instrumental in helping the young pitchers on the team develop.

Next, there is senior pitcher Tim Jones. Jones has a record of 4-1 so far this season and an ERA of 1.93. He has also struck out 41 batters in just 35 innings pitched Jones has been a workhorse for the team all season long and will be crucial in the postseason.

Finally, there is sophomore shortstop Matt Williams Williams is hitting .308 this season and has been a steadying force in the middle of the infield. His defense has been superb all season long, and he has shown glimpses of his potential at the plate as well. Williams will be counted on to provide both Offense and defense as the tournament progresses.

St. Peter’s Baseball: Keys to Success This Season

In order for St. Peter’s to have a successful season they will need to focus on a few key areas.

First, the team will need to improve its hitting. Last season, the team batting average was just .233. While the team does have some good power hitters it needs to do a better job of putting the ball in play and stringing together hits.

Second, the starting pitchers need to be more consistent. The team had a 4.65 ERA last season, which was towards the bottom of the league. The starting pitchers need to give the team a chance to win every night, and they can’t afford to have many off nights.

Lastly, the team needs to play better defense. Last season, the team committed 79 errors, which was also towards the bottom of the league. If they can cut down on their mistakes in the field, it will go a long way towards having a Successful Season

Since it was founded in 2015, the St. Peter’s Baseball Team has undergone many changes. The team has seen new players come and go, and they have had to adapt to different playing styles and strategies. But through it all, the team has grown stronger and more unified. This season, the team is looking to build on their previous successes and make a run at the playoffs.

The core group of players that has been with the team since its inception has really grown into their roles. The team’s captain, senior catcher James O’Reilly, has been a steadying force behind the plate, while junior third baseman Mike Murphy has provided some much-needed power in the lineup. On the pitching side, senior ace Matt McCarthy has been the team’s most reliable starter, while junior reliever Danny Fitzpatrick has been a workhorse out of the bullpen.

The team has also seen some new faces step up this season. Freshman utility player Billy Donovan has been a jack-of-all-trades for the team, while sophomore first baseman Ryan Connelly has been one of the most consistent hitters in the lineup. On the mound, sophomore pitcher Liam McKenna has emerged as a viable option out of the bullpen.

Coach Tony: “We’re really excited for this season. We’ve got a lot of young talent on the team and we’re looking to make a postseason run.”

Coach Ronnie: “Our pitching staff is looking really good this year. We’ve got a lot of depth and we should be able to compete with any team we face.”

Coach Joe: “We’re just focused on taking things one game at a time and getting better every day. If we do that, we’ll be in good shape come postseason time.”

St. Peter’s baseball is one of the most successful sports programs in the state of Missouri. The school has won 19 State Championships the most of any school in Missouri. In addition, St. Peter’s has won four National Championships and has been named the National high school baseball Coaches Association (NHSBCA) National Champions three times. The team is also a five-time recipient of the NHSBCA national team Academic Award.

The St. Peter’s baseball team has shown great promise this season. The team has several young players with a lot of potential. The future looks bright for St. Peter’s baseball.

St. Peter’s Baseball: A Look Back at Last Season

The St. Peter’s varsity Baseball Team had an amazing season last year, finishing with a record of 16-2. The team was led by senior captain Luke Johnson, who batted .500 with four home runs and 26 RBIs. Other top performers included juniors Matt Smith (.458 batting average) and Timmy Hansen (3.48 ERA).

The team’s success was due in large part to their strong pitching staff, which allowed a mere 2.56 runs per game. The staff was anchored by Johnson, who pitched to a 1.42 ERA in 64 innings pitched, striking out an impressive 68 batters. Hansen was also excellent, posting a 3.48 ERA in 54 innings pitched.

The team’s defense was stellar as well, committing just 12 errors in 18 games. Shortstop Matt Smith led the way with a .958 Fielding percentage while second baseman Timmy Hansen wasn’t far behind at .950.

Overall, it was a terrific season for the St. Peter’s varsity baseball team The squad will look to build on their success this year as they move up to Division I competition.
