The history of the St. Petersburg baseball team
The St. Petersburg baseball team has a long and storied history. Founded in 1914, the team has been through many ups and downs, but they have always had a place in the hearts of the people of St. Petersburg.
The team was originally known as the St. Petersburg Saints, and they played their first game in March of 1914 against the Tampa Bay Rowdies. The Saints won that game, and they would go on to win the first ever Florida State League Championship They would win another championship in 1915, but it would be another 30 years before they won again.
During those 30 years, the team went through a lot of changes. They changed their name to the St. Petersburg Pelicans in 1926, and then back to the Saints in 1928. In 1929, they became an affiliate of the New York Yankees and then in 1930 they became an affiliate of the Boston Red Sox
The team continued to struggle through the 1930s and 1940s, but things started to turn around in the 1950s. They won their first-ever Junior World Series in 1951, and then followed that up with a Florida State League Championship in 1952. The team continued to be successful throughout the rest of the decade, winning another Florida State League championship in 1955 and making it to the Junior World Series again in 1956.
The 1960s were a tough decade for the team, as they only made it to the playoffs once during that time period. However, things started to turn around again in the 1970s as they made it back-to-back appearances in the playoffs in 1974 and 1975. The team continued to be competitive throughout the rest of the decade, making it back to the playoffs again in 1979.
