The St. Thomas men’s basketball team improved to 12-1 overall and 6-0 in the Minnesota collegiate athletic conference with a 103-87 victory over Gustavus Saturday afternoon at Schoenecker Arena.

The Tommies shot a season-high 58.8 percent (37-for-63) from the field, including 11-for-22 (50 percent) from 3-point range, and had 28 assists on their 37 made baskets. UST also held a 40-28 rebounding advantage, forced 17 turnovers and scored 27 points off those takeaways.

The game was close in the first half, with St. Thomas leading by just four points at halftime.

The Tommies came out firing in the second half, however, and pulled away for a 103-87 victory. St. Thomas was led by John Naughton, who scored a game-high 28 points. Jack Morrissey added 25 points and eight rebounds, and Mattia Colangelo chipped in with 18 points and six boards.

The Gusties were paced by 20 points apiece from Tanner Omdahl and Charlie Douglas-Rubins, who also had eight rebounds each. Ryan Dornink tallied 14 points and five assists in the loss.

With the win, St. Thomas improves to 4-1 on the season while Gustavus drops to 5-2.

Junior forward Joe Burns led the Tommies with 25 points and eight rebounds, while sophomore guard Riley Battin added 21 points. Junior guard Jesse Johnson chipped in with 11 points, eight assists and six steals.

The Tommies return to action on Saturday, Jan. 19 when they host Hamline at 3 p.m.

Trevor Wittwer scored 21 points and pulled down eight rebounds to lead St. Thomas, while Mattiasis Barke had 20 points and eight rebounds off the bench. David Stokman added 18 points and eight rebounds for the Tommies, who also got 16 points from Zach Riedeman and 12 points from Jordan Johnson.

The 103 points scored by St. Thomas is the most they have scored in a game all season.
