The league’s six teams are each permitted to have up to 30 players on their rosters, with a maximum of 27 being active for each game. A team’s roster can consist of any combination of Position players pitchers, and designated hitters.

At the end of the regular season the top four teams qualify for the playoffs. The playoffs are a best-of-three series, with the 1st and 2nd seeds receiving a bye to the semifinal round. In the event of a tie for any of the playoff positions, a one-game playoff will be held to determine who advances. The Taconic League Championship Series is also a best-of-three series, with the winner being crowned as the league champion.

The Taconic League has seen a number of its alumni go on to play professional baseball including Major League Baseball (MLB). As of 2019, there have been 32 alumni who have reached MLB, including two who have been named MLB All-Stars (Brandon Crawford and Marcus Stroman).
