The UIL realignment occurred in February, and with that came the announcement of which schools will be playing in which districts for the upcoming basketball season

How do the UIL Basketball Alignments work?

The UIL realigns schools every two years in order to create conferences that are as equally matched as possible. The conference that a school is placed in will determine who their district opponents will be. In order for the alignments to be created, the UIL uses a point system that gives more weight to enrollment numbers and recent success in basketball.

Schools are placed into one of eight conferences based on their classification: 1A, 2A, 3A, 4A, 5A, 6A, 7A or 8A. Classifications are based on school enrollment numbers for grades 9-11. Once schools are placed into conferences, they are then split up into districts of no more than five schools. The five schools in a district could come from the same conference or from different conferences.

The goal of the realignment process is to create balanced conferences and districts whereby each school has an equal chance of making the playoffs and competing for a state championship

What are the benefits of the UIL Basketball Alignments?

The UIL Basketball Alignments are created in order to provide competitive advantages for schools across the state. These advantages come in the form of better schedules, more balanced competition, and timing of the season.

The University Interscholastic League released the alignments for the upcoming Basketball season on Thursday. With more than 1,400 schools set to compete in UIL basketball this season, alignments were released for boys and girls teams in three classifications: 5A, 4A and 3A.

In the 5A boys classification, 169 schools were divided into nine districts. The 5A girls classification included 160 schools split into eight districts. What are the drawbacks of the UIL Basketball Alignments?

How will the UIL Basketball Alignments affect the upcoming season?

The UIL basketball alignments for the upcoming season were released on Thursday morning, and there are plenty of changes to go over.
