Tournament Games

The UMass Hockey Schedule for the upcoming season features several tournament games. The first tournament is the Ice Breaker Tournament, which will be played at the Mullins Center in Amherst, Massachusetts. This tournament will feature four teams, including UMass, and will be played from October 5-7. The next tournament is the Friendship Four Tournament, which will be played at the Belfast Titanic Quarter in Belfast, Northern Ireland. This tournament will feature four teams from across the world and will be played from November 30-December 2. The last tournament is the Beanpot Tournament, which will be played at the TD Garden in Boston, Massachusetts. This tournament will feature eight teams from across New England and will be played from February 12-13.

Game Notes

Games against Mercyhurst and Niagara will be the home openers for the Minutemen. The first matchup of the season against Mercyhurst is set for Friday, October 11th at 7:30 p.m., with the second game of the series taking place on Saturday, October 12th at 7 p.m. On Friday, October 18th, UMass will take on Niagara at 7 p.m., with the final game of the series set for Saturday, October 19th at 7 p.m.

Head Coach

Greg Carvel is in his fourth season as the Head Coach of the UMass Minutemen Hockey Team He has led the team to three consecutive winning seasons, including an NCAA tournament appearance in 2018.

Carvel grew up in Reading, Massachusetts and played hockey at UMass-Amherst from 1984-1988. He began his coaching career as an assistant at UMass-Amherst before moving on to other assistant coaching positions at Northeastern University and Cornell University Carvel was also the head coach of the NHL’s Ottawa Senators from 2002-2004.

In 2017, Carvel was named the SpencerPenrose Award winner as the NCAA Division I Men’s Ice Hockey Coach of the Year. He was also named a finalist for the same award in 2018.
