The Cowboys’ greatest period of success came in the late 1940s and early 1950s, when they won five conference championships and made three trips to the NCAA tournament Led by Head Coach Everett Shelton, UW compiled a record of 1948-49 and 1949-50. They followed that up with a trip to the 1950 NCAA Tournament where they defeated Toledo in the first round before losing to Kentucky in the second round.
UW’s next period of dominance came under head coach Jim Brandenburg, who led the Cowboys to nine consecutive winning seasons from 1976-77 to 1984-85.
