In 1873, William Vanderbilt, the grandson of Commodore Cornelius Vanderbilt, founded Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee. The university’s Baseball Team has a long and storied history, dating back to the late 19th century. Today, the Vanderbilt Commodores are one of the top-ranked college baseball teams in the nation.

The Commodores have won 17 SEC championships and have made 11 appearances in the College World Series Vanderbilt has produced many Major League Baseball stars, including Joshteppa Rakesh “Josh” Hamilton, Johnathon Schoop, and David Price. In 2014, the team was ranked #1 in the nation by all major college baseball polls.

Vanderbilt Baseball Off-Season News

Now that the baseball season is over, it’s time to turn our attention to the off-season and what Vanderbilt Baseball has been up to.

The first order of business is the MLB Draft Vanderbilt had 11 players drafted this year, including first round pick AustinMartin. Martin was taken 5th overall by the Toronto Blue Jays and became the highest ever draft pick in school history.

Other players drafted include: JJ Bleday (Marlins), Ethan Paul (Pirates), Patrick Raby (Indians), Kumar Rocker (Athletics), Connor Kaiser (Giants), Reid Schaller (Padres), Ty Duvall (Reds), Philip Pfeifer (Dodgers), Walker Grisanti (Twins) and Carsen Browning (Mariners).

The second order of business is the Coaching Staff Vanderbilt will have a new pitching coach next year as cage coordinator Scott Brown has been promoted to replace Larry Pike, who retired after this season. Brown has been with the program for four years.
