In just five short years, the Walters State baseball program has seen exponential growth and success.

Starting with just six players in 2015, the team has since more than tripled in size. In 2019, the team boasted 23 members.

The team’s first season was a struggle, as the young squad went 4-22 overall. But since then, the team’s win total has increased every year. The 2018 squad posted a 18-15 record, good for fourth place in conference play

This past season was the most successful yet for Walters State Baseball The team compiled a 30-15 overall record and made it to the NJCAA Division I World Series for the first time in program history. The team’s run came to an end in the semifinals, but not before winning three games in pool play and upsetting No. 1 seed Iowa Western in dramatic fashion.

The Walters State Community college baseball team has been on the rise lately, winning conference championships and nationally ranked games. But it wasn’t always this way. Let’s take a look at the history of Walters State baseball

The first Walters State baseball team was fielded in 1975. The team was organized by Bob Wood, who was also the Head Coach The team played its first game against Virginia Intermont and won 14-4. They went on to have a very successful first season, finishing with a record of 27-5.

The following year, the team made it to the NJCAA Division II World Series only to lost in the semifinals. But this was just the beginning of great things to come for Walters State Baseball In 1978, they won their first conference championship and made it back to the World Series They would go on to win five more conference titles in the 1980s.

In 1987, Walters State finally broke through and won the NJCAA Division II World Series defeating San Jacinto junior college 5-4 in the finals. The team went on to win two more World Series titles in 1988 and 1989. They would also make it back to the World Series in 1991 and 1992, but were unable to win another title.

Since those early days, Walters State has continued to be one of the top junior college baseball programs in the country. They have won 12 conference championships and have made it back to the World Series six times since 2001. In 2007, they even reached as high as No.# 2 in the national rankings. currently reside at number 3 in 2019 As you can see, Walters State baseball is definitely on the rise!

The Current Walters State Baseball Team

The current Walters State Baseball Team is a young team on the rise, with only one senior on the roster. This team is packed with potential and looks to build on the success of last year’s team. The fall semester has been a busy one for the team, with numerous scrimmages and exhibition games against some of the Top Juco programs in the country. The team’s hard work has paid off, as they have compiled a record of 13-3 so far this fall.

The team’s offense is led by sophomore shortstop Tyler Coldiron, who is hitting .500 with two home runs and 15 RBIs. Coldiron is joined by sophomore second baseman Brenden Hayden, who is hitting .485 with one home run and 12 RBIs. The duo has been deadly at the top of the order for Walters State, providing a spark for the rest of the lineup.

The pitching staff has been dominant this fall, led by freshman right-hander Brandon Wadford. Wadford has a 3-0 record with a 0.90 ERA in 10 innings pitched He has struck out 12 batters while allowing only one earned run Along with Wadford, sophomores Chase Denson and Dylan Harris have also been key contributors to the pitching staff this fall. Denson has a 1-1 record with a 2.25 ERA in 12 innings pitched, while Harris has a 0-0 record with a 0.00 ERA in 7.2 innings pitched.

With only one senior on the roster, this team will be rely heavily on its young core group of players to lead the way in 2019. If they can continue to develop and progress as they have this fall, Walters State could be in store for another successful season next spring

The Walters State baseball Schedule

The Walters State Community College baseball team has released their schedule for the upcoming season The Senators will play a total of 56 games, 27 of which will be at home on “The Hill.”

Walters State will open their season on the road against conference foe, Chattanooga State, on February 1st. Their home opener will be played against conference rival, Motlow State on February 8th. The Senators will also host a tournament this season on March 8-10 that will feature four teams from around the area.

Some notable games on the schedule include a three-game series at home against Dyersburg State (March 22-24), a three-game road series at Volunteer State (April 12-14), and a four game series at home against Columbia State (May 3-5).

The Senators are coming off a successful 2018 campaign in which they compiled a 42-14 record overall and went 25-7 in conference play They won both the Tennessee Community College Athletic Association regular season and tournament championships and made an appearance in the NJCAA Division I World Series
