In 2017, the Wausau Woodchucks, a Minor League Baseball team in the Northwoods League abruptly ceased operations. The team’s owner had died, and the team was unable to find new ownership. The league gave the Woodchucks a one-year hiatus to find new ownership.

In 2018, after an intense search, the team was bought by Vince Xiong and his family. Vince is originally from Wausau and is passionate about bringing baseball back to his hometown. The Xiongs have invested significant time and resources into making the Woodchucks a first-class organization.

The hiatus was necessary in order to find new ownership that was committed to the long-term success of the team. The Xiongs have proved that they are committed to building a successful franchise, and Wausau baseball is better than ever as a result.

How Wausau Baseball has Improved Since Returning

Since returning from their hiatus, the Wausau baseball team has made some marked improvements. One of the most noticeable changes is the level of talent on the team. In previous years, the team had trouble attracting Top Players but now they seem to be able to compete for some of the best prospects in the area.

Another area that has seen improvement is fan support. In the past, attendance at games was often quite low, but now the team is averaging over 200 fans per game. This increase in support has been instrumental in helping the team continue to improve.

Finally, the level of play on the field has also increased. In previous years, there were often errors and poor decision-making, but now the team looks like a well-oiled machine. They are currently in first place in their division and appear to be poised for a deep run into the playoffs.

Wausau Baseball: A Brief History

Wausau baseball has a long and storied history. The sport was first played in the city in the late 1800s, and the Wausau baseball club was founded in 1892. The team played its first game against a team from Merrill, Wisconsin, on May 16, 1892. Wausau won the game by a score of 9-1.

The Wausau Baseball Club continued to play games against teams from other cities in Wisconsin and Michigan for several years. In 1896, the team joined the newly formed Northern Wisconsin League. The league included teams from Eau Claire Oshkosh, Menasha, Appleton, and Green Bay Wausau won the League Championship that year with a record of 20-2.

The team continued to play in the Northern Wisconsin League until 1900, when it joined Wisconsin State League. The Wisconsin State League was a minor league that included teams from Milwaukee, La Crosse, Racine, Beloit, and Janesville. Wausau had a successful first season in the league, finishing in second place with a record of 30-20.

The team left the Wisconsin State League after just one season and did not become affiliated with any professional baseball leagues for several years. In 1908, however, the Wausau Lumberjacks became one of eight teams in the newly formed class D Northern Michigan League. The Lumberjacks were owned by William Aleshire and managed by Frank Beallis. The team’s home games were played at Athletic Park, which was located on Stewart Avenue near downtown Wausau.

Despite playing in a small city with a population of less than 20,000 people, the Lumberjacks were very successful on the field. They won league championships in 1908 and 1909 and again in 1912 and 1913. In 1914, they had their best season ever, finishing with a record of 97-41-2 and winning their fourth League Championship

Sadly, after winning their fourth league championship, the Lumberjacks were disbanded due to financial problems related to World War I. Baseball would not return to Wausau until 1935 when the Wausau Timberjacks began play as members of theclass C Northwoods League The Timberjacks were owned by Walter Aleshire (son of William Aleshire) and managed by Earl Weaver (who would go on to become one of Major League Baseball’s most successful managers).The team played its home games at Athletic Park (which had been renovated since the Lumberjacks last played there) and finished its inaugural season with a record of 43-59-2.
