The Raptors play their home games at Scotiabank Arena, which they share with the Toronto Maple Leafs of the National Hockey League (NHL). The team was founded by Toronto businessman John Bitove for an expansion fee of $125 million US dollars. At that time, Bitove suggested that Jerry Colangelo–owner of two successful NBA franchises and chairman of USA Basketball –become involved in order to convince other NBA owners of Toronto’s suitability as an expanded market. As part of an agreement with Colangelo and the NBA, Bitove was granted one million shares (a two percent ownership stake) and a seat on the board of directors.

After trying out for several years without success to land an NBA expansion team,Bitove finally sealed a deal with then-NBA Commissioner David Stern on April 3, 1994to bring pro basketball back to Canada for the 1995–96 season amid some criticism from American pundits who questioned whether or not Vancouver and Toronto could support NBA teams.
