They are one of three NHL teams located in the New York metropolitan area; the others being the New Jersey Devils and New York Islanders.

The Rangers were founded in 1926 by Tex Rickard as one of the expansion teams to the NHL. Upon their establishment, Rickard owned a controlling interest in Madison Square Garden, which he used as leverage to get George Lewis “Tex” Norris, then general manager of the Garden, to accept his offer to start a professional hockey team. The Norris agreement allowed Rickard to operate his franchise independently from Norris’s other properties for only $50,000 a year, an unusually low expansion fee that was half what NHL Commissioner Frank Calder had originally asked for new franchises. In spite of this arrangement, Norris was at financial risk and was forced to takeout loans totaling $165,000 by November 1925 in order to meet league approval for the franchise loan. On November 26, 1925, the NHL officially expanded to Canada with seven new franchises: Ottawa Senators, Montreal Maroons, Toronto Maple Leafs, Montreal Canadiens, Vancouver Maroons (defunct), and Calgary Tigers (defunct).

The Rangers’ logo is styled after that ofuan Indian headdress. The Ranger’s home jersey is dark blue with white trim while their away jersey is white with red trim; these colors are also featured on their primary logo. The Rangers have used red as one secondary color on their jerseys and logos intermittently throughout their history; it appeared on various elements of their jerseys during their Original Six era home jerseys from 1926–1928 and 1932–1934; it was featured as one of two stripes on either shoulder of their road jerseys from 1937–1940; and finally it returned as a stripe on both shoulders of their road jerseys starting in 2010 and continuing through 2016.

The Rangers have won four Stanley Cup championships (1993–94, 2011–12), two Presidents’ Trophy titles (1991–92 and 2014–15), 14 division championships ( winners from 1927-28 through 1942-43 earned division titles but not automatic playoff berths; divisions were renamed temporarily for 1943-44 season due to World War II travel restrictions ), including nine consecutive wins from 1993–94 through 2001–02) , and numerous conference championships. They have reached the Stanley Cup Finals 11 times , most recently losing to the Los Angeles Kings in 2014 .
