Elliott made his NFL debut in the Cowboys’ season opener against the New York Giants on September 11, 2016. He had 20 carries for 51 yards and one touchdown in a 20–19 victory. The following week, against the Washington Redskins, he had 21 carries for 83 yards in a 27–23 loss. In Week 3, against the Chicago Bears, he had 30 carries for 140 yards and one touchdown in a 31-17 victory. In Week 4, against the San Francisco 49ers, he had 23 carries for 138 yards in a 24–17 loss.
In his rookie season, Elliott led the league in rushing with 1,631 yards on 322 attempts (5.1 average), along with 15 rushing touchdowns; he also caught 32 passes for 363 yards and one touchdown. He became only the fifth rookie running back to lead the league in rushing, joining Eric Dickerson (1983), George Rogers (1980), Earl Campbell (1978), and Bert Jones (1976). Elliott’s 1,994 all-purpose yards was second among rookies behind only Dickerson’s 2,212 all-purpose yards in 1983. For his efforts during his rookie season, Elliott was named to the PFWA All-Rookie team and was voted NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year by both AP and PepsiMAX. He was also selected to play in the 2017 Pro Bowl as a starter but did not participate due to injury concerns.
