The Wilkes University baseball team is set to open their season on Saturday, February 22nd. They will be facing Washington & Jefferson College in a doubleheader. The first game is scheduled to start at noon, with the second game starting thirty minutes after the conclusion of the first game. This will be the first time these two teams have faced each other in program history.

The Colonels are coming off of a successful 2019 campaign in which they posted a 25-11 record, good for second place in the conference. They are returning fifteen letter winners from that team, including four pitchers who started multiple games. coach Steve Stonis is entering his seventh season at the helm of the program and has a 156-122-1 record during his time with Wilkes.

The Presidents are coming into this season after finishing with a 13-23 record in 2019, good for eighth place in their conference. They are led by senior pitcher Alec Kohut, who made eleven starts last season and posted a 4.50 ERA. Coach Kevin Coulter is entering his sixth season as Head Coach of Washington & Jefferson and has a 72-130 record during his time with the team.

The Wilkes University baseball team is looking to start the season off on the right foot as they open up their 2019 campaign at home against Misericordia University on Saturday, February 23. First pitch is scheduled for noon at Colonel John Logan Field.

The Colonels finished 19-16 overall and 13-5 in the Freedom Conference last season, good for second place in the standings. They will be looking to improve upon that performance this season and contend for a conference title

Leading the way for Wilkes will be senior infielder/pitcher Steve Sessoms, who was named First Team All-Freedom Conference last season. Sessoms batted .333 with two home runs and 19 RBIs while also posting a 3-1 record on the mound with a 3.86 ERA in 28 innings pitched

Also returning for Wilkes are seniors Mike Dolan, Tanner Koch and Jordan Strunk, who were all key contributors to last year’s team. Dolan hit .323 with four home runs and 15 RBIs while Koch batted .309 with one home run and 19 RBIs. Strunk was the team’s top reliever, pitching to a 2-0 record with four saves and a 2.38 ERA in 18.2 innings pitched out of the bullpen.

The Colonels will look to rely on that experience as they attempt to make some noise in the conference this season.
