The future of WSU baseball
The Washington State baseball team (24-25, 10-13 Pac-12) ended its regular season on a high note Thursday, defeating the No. 23 Oregon Ducks 8-2 in Pullman.
The win gives the Cougars their first series victory over a ranked opponent since 2013, and it cements their place in the Pac-12 standings. WSU will be the No. 7 seed in next week’s conference tournament and will take on No. 10 Arizona State in the first round.
With Thursday’s win, the Cougars have now won four of their last five games, and they enter the postseason with some momentum. Head Coach Donnie Marbut said he is proud of his team’s effort and is excited to see what they can do in the tournament.
“Our guys have been playing hard all season long and they deserve this,” Marbut said. “I’m excited to see what they can do against some tough competition next week.”
The Cougars will face a tall task in Arizona State as the Sun Devils are one of the hottest teams in the conference, having won eight of their last 10 games. But if WSU can get past ASU, they will have a good chance to make a run in the tournament and perhaps even earn a spot in the NCAA tournament for the first time since 2013.
