He began playing hockey at the age of three and started playing organized hockey when he was five. He played in the Quebec International Pee-Wee Hockey Tournament with the Laval-sur-le-Lac Canadiens minor ice Hockey Team

In 2010, Zach was drafted into the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL) by the Halifax Mooseheads. He played four seasons with Halifax, winning the President’s Cup in 2013 and the Memorial Cup in 2013. He was also named to the QMJHL First All-Star team in 2012–13 and 2013–14.
