How the 4a Basketball Bracket is Determined

The 4a boys Ball State tournament is a single-elimination tournament held each year to determine the state champion of boys High School basketball’s fourth class in Indiana.

The tournament bracket is made up of four different regions, each of which sends two teams to the State Tournament The winners of each region then advance to the semi-state round, where they play one another to determine which teams will advance to the state championship game.

The Selection Sunday process begins with a committee that ranks all the potential teams that could make the 4a bracket. The committee then creates a seed list, with the top 32 teams being given a 1-32 ranking. The committee also creates “at-large” bids for teams that did not win their region but are still strong enough to be in contention for a state title.

From there, the IHSAA releases the full 4a Basketball Bracket on Selection Sunday. The top 32 seeded teams are placed in the bracket first, followed by the at-large bid teams. The matchups are then determined by random draw.

The first four rounds of the 4a State Tournament are played at regional sites around the state, with the semi-state and state championship games being played at Bankers Life Fieldhouse in Indianapolis.

The Different Regions in the 4a Basketball Bracket

There are four different regions in the 4a Basketball Bracket The teams are seeded 1-16 in each region and they play each other in a best of three series. The winner of each region advances to the state tournament

The Seeds in the 4a Basketball Bracket

The IHSAA boys Ball State Tournament is a single-elimination tournament held each year to determine the State Champions of Indiana high school basketball. Notably, it is the oldest such tournament in the United States The tournament has been held every year since 1911, except for 1917-18 (due to World War I) and 1942-45 (due to World War II).

A total of 494 schools have competed in the tournament since its inception. As of 2018, Desmond Bane of New Castle is the most recent Mr. Basketball winner from a 4A school.

How the 4a Basketball Bracket Works

The 4a Basketball Bracket works by taking the 64 teams in the state with the best records and putting them into a tournament. The teams are then put into a class based on their record. The top 32 teams in the state are put into the 4a class. The next 16 teams are put into the 3a class, and so on.

The 4a class is then divided into four sections, each containing 16 teams. The top team in each section is given a bye in the first round, while the other 15 teams play each other. The winner of each game goes on to play the team with the bye in the second round, and so on until there is only one team left standing in each section.

This team is then declared the state champion in their respective class.
