This was the first time that the Alamodome had hosted an All-Star Game as well as the first time that an All-Star game was played in Texas. The Western Conference won the game 133-122. Shaquille O’Neal of the Los Angeles Lakers was named the game’s Most Valuable Player (MVP).
This was also the first year that the term “All-Star” was used to refer to starters; up until this point, only reserves were referred to as “All-Stars”. Additionally, this was flatly stated to be an exhibition game with little to no defense played; both Toine Hermans and Dick Harter declined to coach either team for this reason.
