The following is a beginner’s guide to 3x3 basketball.
3x3 basketball is a form of the game played three a side on one hoop. It is an IOC-recognized discipline administered by FIBA, the sport’s international governing body.
The object of the game is to score more points than the opposition through shooting baskets or Free throws with the winner being the first to 21 points, or whichever team has the most points at the end of 10 minutes.
Baskets are worth one point if shot from inside the arc and two points if shot from outside it, while all Free throws are worth one point.
During each possession, teams can take a maximum of two shots and possession switches after every made basket or foul. fouls also give teams an opportunity to score ‘points’, with one point being awarded for each successful free throw under FIBA’s ‘1+1’ rule.
The game is played on a standard half-court with teams consisting of four players – three ‘field players’ and one ‘libero’. The libero is a designated substitute who can enter the game at any time for any player and must wear a different colour jersey to their teammates.
There are no time-outs in 3x3 basketball and play only stops when the ball goes out of bounds or when a foul is called, at which point teams are given seven seconds to attempt to score or inbound from Half Court If neither team has scored after 10 minutes, then whoever is leading at that stage wins the game.
