“I think communication is critical in any relationship… You have to be able to communicate effectively with your wife, your kids, your friends, your co-workers, your boss. And I think as a coach, obviously you have to be able to communicate with your players.”
He also emphasized the importance of staying positive and being grateful for what you have:
“I think that it’s important that we all stay positive and be thankful for what we have… It doesn’t matter what our circumstances are in our lives, there’s always somebody that has it worse than we do. After a few months away from coaching, Williams is now focusing on his family and business endeavors.

How Vt basketball coach Buzz Williams is Building His Program
When Buzz Williams was hired as the head men’s Basketball Coach at Virginia Tech in 2014, he inherited a program that was in need of a major rebuild.
Williams has since made significant progress in his efforts to turn the Hokies into a contender in the ACC. He has put together a talented young core of players, including freshman guard Nickeil Alexander-Walker and sophomore center Kerry Blackshear Jr.
Williams has also instilled a new culture of hard work and discipline within the program. The team regularly puts in long hours of practice and film study, and Williams has emphasized the importance of doing things the right way both on and off the court.
As a result of Williams’s efforts, the Hokies have shown significant improvement over the past few years. They reached the NCAA tournament for the first time since 2007 last season, and they are currently ranked No. 16 in the AP poll.
There is still plenty of work to be done in order for Virginia Tech to become a true contender for an ACC title, but under Williams’s leadership, it is clear that the program is headed in the right direction.
What Vt basketball coach Buzz Williams is Looking for in recruits
Now that the early Signing Period is over and the final Signing Day for College Basketball is less than two months away, Williams and his staff have to make some decisions on who they want to recruit for next season.
The staff has already been out on the recruiting trail this year and has hosted a number of top prospects on official visits, but they still have some work to do.
In an interview with The Roanoke Times, Williams said that he and his staff are looking for players who fit a certain profile.
“We’re looking for guys that are versatile, that can play multiple positions ” Williams said. “Guys that are good decision-makers, that understand how to play off of each other. Guys that are selfless.”
While those qualities are important, Williams said the most important thing he is looking for in recruits is a good work ethic.
“The one thing we can’t coach is effort,” Williams said. “You either have it or you don’t.”
If a player has the effort and the willingness to work hard, then Williams said he is willing to overlook some of the other areas where a player might be lacking.
“There’s always going to be things in every kid’s game that we wish we could change or improve upon,” Williams said. “But if they’re coachable and they have a great attitude and they’re working hard, then those are usually the guys that end up being really good players.”
How Vt basketball coach Buzz Williams is Giving Back
In between coaching jobs, Williams took some time to give back. He worked with his old High School coach Jimmy Williams at a Basketball Camp for kids. He also worked with Camp Sonshine, a Christian camp for children with special needs.
