Since the late 1990s, Bartow High School’s basketball team has been one of the most successful programs in the state of Florida. During this time period, the Yellow Jackets have won five State Championships and produced a number of Division-I college players. head coach Petehestar Brown has been at the helm for all five of Bartow’s state titles, and he is widely regarded as one of the best coaches in the state.

The Yellow Jackets’ first state championship came in 1998, when they defeated Miami high school in the Class 6A final. Bartow would go on to win state titles in 2000, 2001, 2002, and 2003. In 2003, the Yellow Jackets defeated Miami Senior high school in the Class 6A state championship game, avenging their only loss from the previous season.

Bartow high school has produced a number of Division-I college basketball players including Anfernee Hardaway and Speedy Claxton. Hardaway was a member of Bartow’s 1993 state championship team and went on to have a successful NBA career with the Orlando Magic and New York Knicks Claxton was a Standout Player for Bartow during the late 1990s and went on to have a successful career at Hofstra University

Coach Bartow began his coaching career at the high school level, leading Bartow high school to a State Championship in 1955. He then went on to college coaching, first at Memphis State University and then at the University of Alabama At Alabama, he coached the Crimson Tide to their first NCAA tournament appearance in 1971.

Coach Bartow’s tree continued to bear fruit in the NBA, where his disciples included such successful coaches as Don Nelson, Lenny Wilkens, Jerry Sloan, and Hubie Brown. Several of his former players also went on to have successful coaching careers, including Nolan Richardson and Tubby Smith.
