The History of Limburg United Basketball

Limburg United is a Dutch Professional Basketball Club from the city of Heerlen, Netherlands. The club plays in the Dutch Basketball League (DBL), the highest Professional Basketball league in the Netherlands.

The club was founded in 1946 as EBBC Heerlen, making it one of the Oldest Basketball clubs in the Netherlands. In its early years, the club competed in regional competitions. In 1963, EBBC Heerlen won its first Dutch national title. The following year, the club made its European debut in the newly founded European Champions Cup (now known as the EuroLeague).

In 1988, EBBC Heerlen changed its name to ZZ Leiden, after a merger with another local team Zonnebloem Almelo. The new team enjoyed great success in the late 1980s and early 1990s, winning three consecutive Dutch national titles from 1991 to 1993. In 1992, ZZ Leiden made its return to European competition, and reached the semi-finals of the FIBA European League (now known as the EuroCup).

In 1999, ZZ Leiden merged with two other Dutch basketball clubs, CBV Maastricht and Hercules Amsterdam, to form Landstede Basketbal. The new team continued ZZ Leiden’s tradition of success, winning two more Dutch national titles in 2000 and 2001.

In 2012, Landstede Basketbal changed its name to Limburg United, after a merger with another local team, BC Weert. The new team quickly became one of the top teams in the Netherlands, winning back-to-back Dutch national titles in 2013 and 2014.

Today, Limburg United is one of the most successful basketball clubs in the Netherlands. The team has won a total of eight Dutch national titles and has participated in European competitions on numerous occasions.
