The Batavia Muckdogs are back and better than ever. After a hiatus of nearly two decades, the minor league baseball team is set to return to Batavia, New York. The Muckdogs will play their home games at Dwyer Stadium, which is currently undergoing renovations.
The team was originally founded in 1939 and played in Batavia until 1997. They were then sold and moved to Ohio, where they became the Dayton Dragons In 2006, the team was bought by a group of local investors and moved back to Batavia.
The Muckdogs are named after the nickname for the city of Batavia’s residents. The name was originally given to the city’s workers who labored in the muck-filled Erie Canal.

The Muckdogs play their home games at Dwyer Stadium in Batavia, New York. The team is a member of the Northwest League, a short-season affiliate of the Miami Marlins
The Muckdogs were founded in 1939 as the Batavia Clippers. The team played its first game on May 18th, 1939, against the Jamestown Falcons. The Clippers were members of the Pony League ( Pennsylvania, Ohio, New York) until 1955 when they joined the newly created New York-Pennsylvania League. In 1962, the Clippers became affiliated with the Pittsburgh Pirates and changed their name to the Batavia Pirates.
The team continued to play as the Pirates until 1986 when they became an affiliate of the Chicago White Sox The team changed their name to the Batavia Sox and won back-to-back league championships in 1987 and 1988. In 1989, the Sox moved to Geneva, New York, and became known as the Geneva Cubs.
In 1994, professional baseball returned to Batavia when a new team called the Muckdogs was founded. The name was chosen through a public contest and pays tribute to Batavia’s history as a leading producer of muck fertilizer. The Muckdogs have won two league championships (2000 and 2010) and continue to be one of the most popular teams in Minor League Baseball
