The bullpen

The bullpen is the area of the baseball diamond where Relief pitchers warm up before entering the game. The term can also refer to the group of relief pitchers on a team. A typical Major League Baseball team has seven or eight relief pitchers making it one of the larger units on the roster.

Thebullpen is typically located in foul territory between the infielders and the outfielders. Relief pitchers usually enter the game when their team is losing, and they often come into close or high-pressure situations. They are usually replaced by starting pitchers or Position players when their task is done.

The most common types of relief pitchers are closers, setup men, and middle relievers. Closers are typically used in the ninth inning to protect a lead, and they are often the best reliever on the team. Setup men are used in the eighth inning to set up the closer for a successful save, and middle relievers are used in any inning after the fifth.

Relief pitching has become increasingly specialized in recent years and most teams now have at least one left-handed and one right-handed specialist in their bullpen. Some teams also have long relievers, who can pitch multiple innings if necessary, and mop-up men, who come into games that have already been decided to finish them off.
