The team was founded by Al Reach and John Rogers in 1883. The Eagles played their home games at PhiladelphiaBaseball Grounds, which was located at Broad and Huntingdon Streets in North Philadelphia.
The Eagles finished in first place in the National League in 1883 with a record of 73-32-1. Pitcher Charles Radbourn won 40 games for the Eagles that season and was later inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame The Eagles won the National League pennant again in 1885 with a record of 77-29-1, but they lost to the Chicago White Stockings in the World Series After a second-place finish in 1886, the Eagles compiled a disappointing 43-60-1 record in 1887 and finished in sixth place. The team folded after the 1887 season.

The team hit rock bottom in 1894, finishing last in the National League for the second time in franchise history with a woeful record of 27-61. However, 1895 would be much better for the team as they rebounded to finish third place with an improvedrecord of 54-40. 1896 was another down year for franchise as they slumped backto last place with 33-51 record but 1897 saw them return to respectabilitywith 5th placed 82-47 finish.

On April 26, 1883, the Philadelphia Eagles played their first baseball game against the Brooklyn Atlantics, in front of a crowd of around 3,000 people. The Eagles won the game by a score of Brooklyn 2, Philadelphia 1.
The team’s name was chosen by team owner Edward Barrow after the American bald eagle. The choice was made to reflect Philadelphia’s status as the nation’s “Eagle” city, as well as to avoid any confusion with the local National League team, which was also called the “Phillies.”

In 1884, the Eagles signed future Hall of Fame third baseman George Brett to his first professional contract. Brett made his Major League debut with the Eagles on September 10, 1884, and became one of the team’s best players. He played in 35 games for the Eagles that season, batting .337 with two home runs and 19 RBIs.
Despite Brett’s presence on the roster, the Eagles finished last place in 1884 with a record of 43-79. They fared no better in 1885, finishing last again with a 46-76 record.
In 1886, Reach hired Bill Shettsline to be his new manager. Shettsline had previously managed the Cincinnati Reds and Washington Nationals (now known as the Minnesota Twins). Under Shettsline’s leadership, the team improved their record to 52-68 but still finished last place in 1886.
On October 2, 1886, owner Al Reach sold first baseman Tim O’Neill to Cincinnati Reds for $500 cash ($13 thousand today). O’Neill had been one of Ihe few bright spots on an otherwise dismal team; he batted .313 with 16 home runs and 74 RBIs while playing all 132 games for Ihe Eagles that season.” Releasing their best player demonstrates just how little faith Reach had in his team’s ability to improve going forward.
