It all started with a man named John McGraw. A former player and manager for the New York Giants McGraw was hired as Longwood’s head baseball coach in 1902. He quickly turned the team into a powerhouse, leading the squad to five consecutive NCAA championships from 1902-1906.

under McGraw’s tutelage, Longwood became known for its strong defense and aggressive Base running This style of play helped the team to rack up an impressive string of wins, culminating in another NCAA championship in 1909.

McGraw left Longwood after the 1909 season to return to the Giants, but his legacy lived on through his protege, Miller Huggins. Huggins took over as head coach in 1910 and led the team to two more NCAA championships in 1911 and 1912.

After Huggins’ departure for the Major Leagues Longwood went through a bit of a dry spell, failing to win another NCAA championship until 1970. However, under Head Coach Joe McCarthy, who led the team from 1937-1946, the squad enjoyed a period of sustained success, making seven straight appearances in the NCAA tournament from 1940-1946.
