Baby Cakes, the New Orleans baseball team is now serving up Halal options! Check out our blog to learn more about this delicious new addition to the stadium.
Introduction
Since Islam prohibits the eating of pork, Baby Cakes fans who are Muslim have long had to choose between their love of the team and their religious beliefs. But that changed this year when the team announced that they would be offering halal options at their concession stands.
Baby Cakes General Manager Gabe Paul says that the decision was made in response to requests from Muslim fans. “We want to be able to cater to all of our fans, and we knew that this was something that was important to our Muslim fans,” Paul said.
The team is working with a local halal butcher to provide chicken and beef options that meet Islamic dietary guidelines. All of the food is prepared in a separate area from the non-halal food and Paul says they plan to make sure that everything is clearly labeled so that fans know what they’re getting.
The halal options are available at all Baby Cakes home games and Paul says they’ve been well-received so far. “We’ve had a lot of positive feedback from our Muslim fans,” he said. “They’re glad to finally have some options that they can eat.”

The History of Baby Cakes
The New Orleans Baby Cakes formerly the Zephyrs, are a Minor League Baseball team based in Metairie, Louisiana. The Baby Cakes play in the Pacific Coast League (PCL) and are the Triple-A affiliate of the Miami Marlins They play their home games at Shrine on Airline.
The team was established in 1993 as a member of the Triple-A Alliance. The Triple-A Alliance was a joint venture of the National Association of professional baseball Leagues—the governing body of minor league baseball—and Major League Baseball (MLB). This league placed its four teams in cities without an Major League or Triple-A team. As part of this partnership, each Alliance team was affiliated with two MLB clubs. The Triple-A Zephyrs were affiliated with both the Houston Astros and Montreal Expos/Washington Nationals
In 1998, the Triple-A Zephyrs moved from Denver, Colorado to New Orleans, Louisiana. They became known as the New Orleans Zephyrs. In 2002, they became affiliated with only the Milwaukee Brewers
In 2006, following Hurricane Katrina and the subsequent levee failure disaster, which caused extensive damage to Greater New Orleans—including Shirley Plantation where Zephyr Field is located—MLB temporarily relocated the Houston Astros’ home games to Zephyr Field for that season’s final three months. This made them one of three teams to host Major League baseball games (the others being Fenway Park and Wrigley Field).
On June 18, 2010, it was announced that for at least two years beginning in 2011, the New Orleans Saints would play their home games at Zephyr Field while their home stadium—the Louisiana Superdome—underwent renovations necessary as a result of damage incurred during Hurricane Katrina and its aftermath five years earlier.
The Menu
In addition to the staples like hot dogs hamburgers, and french fries, Baby Cakes will also be offering up some Halal-friendly options. This includes a Halal chicken sandwich, as well as a falafel wrap. The chicken sandwich will be served on a toasted bun with lettuce, tomato, and mayo.
