2017 Husker baseball position Previews
As Fall Ball comes to a close, the 2017 Husker Baseball team is starting to take shape. Here’s a position-by-position look at what we can expect from this year’s squad.
Catchers:
With seniors Jesse Wilkening and Tanner Lubach gone, the catching duties will fall to juniors Blake Christensen and Mikey Edie. Christensen is the expected starter, butEdie saw significant time behind the plate last season and will be a key part of the catching tandem. Freshman Luke Roskam will also be in the mix as he looks to provide depth at the position.
Infield:
The Huskers will have a veteran infield in 2017, led by seniors Ryan Boldt, Ben Miller and Angelo Orlando. Boldt and Orlando are expected to start at shortstop and second base, respectively, while Miller will see time all over the infield. Junior Evan Kaczmarski is also back after starting 27 games last season and will be in the mix for time at second base and in left field Freshmen Kyle Kraus and Jesse Scholtens will provide depth at third base and first base, respectively.
Outfield:
The Huskers have a solid nucleus returning in the outfield with seniors Jake Meyers, Austin Darby and Luke Roskam leading the way. Meyers is expected to start in center field after finishing second on the team with a .321 batting average last season, while Darby should start in right field. Roskam provides plenty of depth as he can play both infield and outfield.Freshman Mojo Hagge will also be in the mix for time in left field after impressing coaches during fall ball.
