The Liberty Baseball Team broke the school record for most wins in a season with a 13-3 victory over radford on Sunday. The Flames (41-17, 21-5 Big South) have now won eight straight games and will be the No. 1 seed in next week’s Big South tournament.
It’s been an incredible season for Liberty, which set the record for most wins in a season while also winning its first regular-season conference championship since 2009. The Flames have been led by a strong pitching staff and an offense that has come alive in recent weeks.
Next up for Liberty is the Big South tournament, which will be held from May 23-27 at Segra Stadium in Lynchburg, Virginia. The Flames will have a first-round bye and will open play on May 24 against the winner of Tuesday’s game between Presbyterian and Gardner-Webb.

The Flames will have a chance to add to their win total on Sunday afternoon as they close out their regular season with a Home game against Gardner-Webb.

Sophomore starting pitcher Tanner Gideon led the team in wins, pitching to a 10-1 record and a 3.48 ERA. Gideon was also selected as a First Team All-American by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association.
Junior second baseman Will expectations soaring for next year’s team? Valachovic was named Big South Player of the Year after batting .358 with 10 home runs 19 stolen bases and 45 RBIs. Valachovic was also named First Team All-American by Collegiate Baseball Newspaper and the American Baseball Coaches Association.
Outfielder and closer Zech Lemond was named Big South Freshman of the Year after batting .313 with eight home runs 35 RBIs and 12 saves. Lemond was also selected as a Freshman All-American by multiple publications, including perfect game USA, Louisville Slugger and the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association.

On Tuesday afternoon, the Liberty baseball team came within one run of tying the school record for most runs scored in a game. The Flames put up an impressive 20 runs against New Mexico, but ultimately fell short, losing 21-20.
It was a back-and-forth game from the start, with each team scoring in every inning except the fifth. Liberty took the lead in the bottom of the seventh with a three-run home run by junior infielder Dalton Jeffries, but New Mexico answered right back with four runs in the top of the eighth.
The Flames regained the lead in the bottom of the ninth with a bases-clearing triple by senior outfielder Michael Slaten, but once again, New Mexico responded, this time with a walk-off home run in the top of the tenth.
While it wasn’t the result they were hoping for, Liberty head coach Jim Toman was proud of his team’s effort. “I’m proud of how our guys competed today,” he said. “We scored 20 runs against a very good team, and we almost pulled off what would have been an amazing come-from-behind win.”

With so much talent returning, Liberty is poised to make another run at the conference title and reach the NCAA tournament for the second straight year.
