The history of the Michigan Dearborn baseball team

The University of Michigan Dearborn Baseball Team has a long and storied history dating back to the early days of the school. The team has won numerous conference championships and made several appearances in the NCAA Division II World Series

UM-Dearborn first fielded a baseball team in 1967, under the direction of Head Coach Wilfred “Bill” Dick. The team went 9-11 in its first season but quickly turned things around, winning the first of five conference championships in 1969.

The 1970s were a decade of great success for Michigan-Dearborn baseball, as the team won four more conference titles and made two appearances in the NCAA Division II World Series In 1975, under head coach Jim DeSana, UM-Dearborn made its first World Series appearance, losing to eventual champion Florida Southern in the semi-finals. The following year, the team made it back to the World Series but again came up short, this time losing to South Dakota State in the semi-finals.

UM-Dearborn’s most recent conference championship came in 1995, under Head Coach Bob Brown. The team has not made a return trip to the World Series since 1975 but has remained competitive year after year. In 2012, under current Head coach Dan Garelick, UM-Dearborn earned an at-large bid to the NCAA Division II tournament but was ultimately ousted by Central Missouri in the regional round.

Dickie Thon: Thon was a shortstop for the team from 1967 to 1970 and is considered one of the best Defensive Players in team history. He was a three-time All-American and led the team to two College World Series appearances.

Alan Trammell: Trammell was a shortstop for the team from 1976 to 1980 and is one of the best offensive players in team history. He is a two-time All-American and holds the record for most hits in a season (103). He was inducted into the college baseball Hall of Fame in 2014.

Barry Larkin Larkin was a shortstop for the team from 1983 to 1986 and is considered one of the best all-around players in team history. He is a three-time All-American and won the Golden Spikes Award (given to the best amateur baseball player in the country) in 1985. He was inducted into the college baseball Hall of Fame in 2008.

BASEBALL IN DEARBORN: A HISTORY

The first organized baseball games in Dearborn were played in the 1880s, on a field located near what is now the intersection of Telegraph and Michigan Avenue. In those early days, the game was mostly played by factory workers from the nearby Ford Rouge Plant.

As the years went by, baseball became increasingly popular in Dearborn. In the early 1900s, semi-professional teams began sprouting up around town, and by the 1920s, Dearborn had its own professional team: the Detroit Stars of the Negro National League The Stars called Dearborn home for four seasons (1928-1931), playing their home games at Mack Park (located on what is nowouter Drive).

In addition to being home to the Detroit Stars, Mack Park was also host to numerous other Negro League teams over the years, as well as Detroit Tigers exhibition games. Dearborn’s love affair with baseball continued into the post-integration era; in 1950, legendary Tiger player Hank Greenberg bought a house in Dearborn and made it his off-season home. He lived there until his death in 1986.

Since then, Dearborn has produced a number of Major League Baseball players, including Jeff Weaver (who pitched for four different teams over fifteen seasons) and Pat Misch (who played for three different teams over seven seasons). Several other former Major Leaguers also got their start in Dearborn youth leagues, including Steve Drucker (Baltimore Orioles), Brad Ausmus(Los Angeles Dodgers), and Chris Hoiles(Baltimore Orioles).

Today, baseball remains an important part of life in Dearborn. The city is home to several amateur and semi-professional teams, as well as dozens of youth leagues. Every summer, thousands of people flock to Ford Field to watch the Detroit Tigers play exhibition games against other Major League teams. And every October, fans pack into Comerica Park to watchthe Tigers compete in the World Series
