Since the early 2000s, Vanderbilt baseball has been one of the most successful programs in college baseball The team has made it to the College World Series five times, winning it all in 2014. They have also produced a number of Major League Baseball (MLB) stars, including David Price, Sonny Gray Jeremy Sowers, and Mike Minor
Today, there are close to 30 Vanderbilt alumni playing in the MLB. That list includes some of the best players in the league, like Mookie Betts J.J. Hardy, and Dan Jennings These Vandy alums are making an impact on the diamond and represent the school well.

Vanderbilt has a rich baseball tradition, and that tradition continues to pay dividends at the minor league level. Below are just some of the Vanderbilt Baseball alumni who are currently making an impact in the minors:
Dansby Swanson (Atlanta Braves): The No. 1 overall pick in the 2015 MLB Draft Swanson is among the top prospects in all of baseball. The slick-fielding shortstop is currently playing for the Double-A Mississippi Braves and is one of the leaders in a very solid Atlanta farm system
Tyler Beede (San Francisco Giants): A first-round pick in 2014, Beede made his Major League debut with the Giants earlier this season and has since been up-and-down between Triple-A and San Francisco He’s currently pitching for the Triple-A Sacramento River Cats.
Tony Kemp (Houston Astros): An outstanding contact hitter, Kemp has been one of the Houston Astros’ best prospects over the past few years. He made his Major League debut earlier this season and is currently playing for the Triple-A Fresno Grizzlies.
Mark Montgomery (New York Yankees): One of the top relief prospects in baseball, Montgomery has been steadily climbing up the Yankees’ farm system over the past few years. He’s currently pitching for the Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders

High school baseball is always an exciting time for young athletes and their families. It’s a time when players get to show off their hard work and dedication on the field, and it’s also a time when they can impress college scouts with their skills. While some High School athletes go on to play college baseball others choose to pursue professional careers. Vanderbilt University has produced many successful baseball players who have gone on to have successful professional careers. Here are just a few of them.
Dansby Swanson: Dansby Swanson was drafted first overall by the Arizona Diamondbacks in 2015. He made his Major League debut in 2016 and has since become one of the league’s most exciting young players Swanson is a two-time All-Star and was named National League Rookie of the Year in 2016.
David Price: David Price was drafted fifth overall by the Tampa Bay Rays in 2007. He made his Major League debut in 2008 and quickly established himself as one of the league’s top pitchers. Price is a five-time All-Star and was named American League Cy Young Award winner in 2012.
Sonny Gray: Sonny Gray was drafted 18th overall by the Oakland Athletics in 2011. He made his Major League debut in 2013 and has since become one of the league’s top pitchers. Gray is a two-time All-Star and was named American League Pitcher of the Year in 2015.
Vanderbilt baseball alumni in the military
Since the outbreak of World War II, Vanderbilt baseball has lost alumni to military service in every American conflict. The total is now at least 20, with the most recent being pitcher Philip Pfeifer, who left the team in 2016 to enlist in the U.S. Army.
Pfeifer, from Franklin, Tenn., was a key member of Vanderbilt’s 2014 SEC Championship team, appearing in 35 games with a 6-2 record and 3.14 ERA. He was drafted by the Los Angeles Dodgers after his junior season but opted to return to Vanderbilt for his senior year.
In May 2016, Pfeifer enlisted in the Army and began his training at Fort Benning, Ga. He was later assigned to the 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault) at Fort Campbell, Ky., and deployed to Afghanistan in 2017.

Since Vanderbilt University’s baseball program began in 1886, it has produced numerous Major League Baseball (MLB) alumni. As of 2019, 30 Vanderbilt alumni have played in MLB. Vanderbilt has had at least one player in every MLB season since 1951. Notable Vanderbilt baseball alumni include pitchers David Price and Sonny Gray, as well as second baseman Dansby Swanson.
In recent years Vanderbilt Baseball alumni have made an impact in the media as well. David Price, who won the 2012 American League Cy Young Award is now a pitching analyst for the Boston Red Sox on NESN. – Dr. James Crowe is a renowned expert in virology and head of the Vanderbilt Vaccine Center, one of the leading research centers for developing vaccines for diseases like Ebola and HIV.
– George Cushingberry Jr., an alumnus of both Vanderbilt and Harvard Law School, is a prominent Detroit attorney and politician who has served on the city council and as Wayne County prosecutor.
– Andres Lopez is a partner at Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher LLP, one of the world’s leading law firms, and he also serves on Vanderbilt’s Board of Trustees.
