Sacred Heart Hockey: A Program on the Rise

The Sacred Heart Hockey Program is one on the rise in the college ranks. With a new Head Coach and a strong recruiting class the team is poised to make some noise in the coming years.

Introduction

In 1924, a group of Catholic High School students in Detroit, Michigan formed a Hockey Team They called themselves the “Sacred Heart Hockey Club”. Little did they know that their team would go on to have a profound impact on the game of hockey, and would lay the foundation for what is now known as Sacred Heart University’s Division I Men’s Ice Hockey Program.

The Sacred Heart Hockey Club was one of the first organized Catholic Youth Hockey teams in North America Their success on the ice inspired other Catholic schools to form their own teams, and soon there were Catholic Youth teams all across Canada and the United States These teams would go on to compete in some of the first organized Catholic Youth Hockey tournaments, including the Detroit Invitational Tournament (which is now known as the Memorial Cup).

The Sacred Heart Hockey Club also had a significant impact on the development of professional hockey in North America Several members of the team went on to play in the National Hockey League (NHL), including Hall of Fame goaltender Terry Sawchuk. In addition, several members of the team went on to become coaches and executives at the NHL level, including Jack Adams (who was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame as a builder) and Tommy Gorman (who won seven Stanley Cups as a general manager).

The Sacred Heart Hockey Club ceased operations in 1971, but their legacy continues on through Sacred Heart University’s Division I Men’s Ice hockey Program. The program has been a member of Atlantic Hockey since its inception in 2003, and has won two conference championships (in 2007 and 2012). The program has also produced several NHL players including former first-Round Draft pick Olivier Magnan-Grenier.

Assistant coaches Jeff Caron and Brian Troy have also been instrumental in the team’s development. Caron, who played at Sacred Heart from 2009 to 2013, has been with the program for four years and brings a wealth of knowledge and experience.
