The History of Auburn Hockey
The Auburn Hockey Program traces its origins back to the early part of the 20th century. The sport was first introduced to the Auburn campus in 1903 by Dr. George Petrie, who organized a team of students to play against faculty members. The team was short-lived, however, and it wasn’t until nearly 30 years later that hockey would resurface at Auburn.
In 1930, a group of students formed a new Hockey Team and began playing against other colleges in the Southeast. The team quickly gained a reputation for being tough and physical, and they were soon nicknamed the “Flying Tigers ” The team enjoyed success in their early years, winning several championships in the 1930s and 1940s.
In 1950, the Auburn hockey program took a step forward when it joined the newly formed East Conference The SEC was the first collegiate Hockey conference in the United States and Auburn quickly established itself as one of the top teams in the league. The Flying Tigers won their first SEC Championship in 1951, and would go on to win four more titles in the next decade.
Auburn also enjoyed success on the national stage in the 1950s, reaching the semifinals of the NCAA tournament in 1957 and 1958. The Flying Tigers finally broke through to win their first National Championship in 1959, defeating Michigan State 3-2 in overtime. Auburn went on to win two more national titles in 1963 and 1964, cementing their place among the nation’s elite hockey programs
Today, Auburn remains one of the top programs in collegiate hockey. The Flying Tigers have won ten SEC Championships since joining the conference in 1950, and they have reached the NCAA Tournament 23 times. Auburn has also produced a number of NHL players over the years, including former Stanley Cup champions Tom Lysiak and Greg Johnson.
