History of AAU Basketball

The Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) is an American nonprofit organization that promotes amateur sports and physical fitness programs, headquartered in Indianapolis, Indiana. The AAU was founded on January 21, 1888. Dr. James Naismith and Augustus Hutcheson are credited with founding the AAU. Hutcheson brought together 13 state representatives to Springfield, Massachusetts that year where the document organizing the AAU was created.

The goal of the AAU is “to create common standards in amateur sport”. The AAU endeavors to develop the talents of youth through their involvement in sports and fitness programs while also promoting leadership skills and character development. AAU membership form indicates that the “voluntary nature of the organization’s programs foster family involvement, individual commitment, and developmental growth”.

In 1910, the AAU received support by President Theodore Roosevelt who stated:

The Amateur Athletic Union is distinctly American in conception and purpose… its work is of supreme value to our country … its free play for all policy has produced thousands of athletes who have done great things for our country both on fields of sport and on fields of battle; its members are doing a great work for clean sport by deciding not to engage in professional athletics; … I believe that the Amateur Athletic Union has done more for sport in America than any one else has done.

AAU Basketball tryouts

The AAU Basketball tryouts for the state of Tennessee will be held on May 8th and 9th. All players who are interested in trying out for the AAU team must be registered by May 1st. The tryouts will be held at the Memphis Sports Academy, located at 7777 Walnut Grove Road.
Players must bring their own basketball and water bottle Water will be provided, but players are encouraged to bring their own as well. Tryouts will consist of a variety of drills and scrimmages.
Players must wear proper basketball attire and sneakers. No jeans or street shoes will be allowed. All players must have a valid AAU membership in order to try out.
The cost of the AAU membership is $16 and can be obtained through the AAU website or by visiting the Memphis Sports Academy prior to tryouts.
