The Akron Zips men’s basketball team is coached by Keith Dambrot, who has been with the program for over 30 years. The Zips are currently in their first season under Dambrot after a coaching change last year. He has led the Zips to four NCAA tournament appearances and three consecutive 20-win seasons.

John Groce (born October 4, 1972) is an American college basketball coach He is the head men’s basketball coach at the University of Akron, a position he has held since 2017.
Groce played college basketball at Taylor University from 1990 to 1994. He began his coaching career as an assistant at Ottawa University from 1994 to 1996. He then served as an Assistant Coach at Oberlin College from 1996 to 1998 and at Ohio State from 1998 to 2002. From 2002 to 2008, Groce was an assistant coach at Xavier University
In 2008, Groce was hired as the head men’s basketball coach at Ohio University where he coached for four seasons. In 2012, he led the Bobcats to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 1994. He was named the Mid-American Conference Coach of the Year that season.
In 2013, Groce was hired as the head men’s basketball coach at the University of Illinois In his first season with the Illini, he led them to a 23-13 record and a berth in the NCAA tournament The following year, Illinois won 20 games and made it back to the NCAA tournament In 2015-16, Groce led Illinois to a 15-19 record and missed out on postseason play.
On March 11, 2017, Groce was hired as the head men’s Basketball Coach at Akron after seven seasons at Illinois.

He has compiled a 92-71 (.565) record, including a 50-32 (.610) mark in Mid-American conference play The Zips have won at least 20 games in three of his first four seasons and have participated in postseason play each year, highlighted by an NCAA tournament appearance in 2015-16.
Off the court, Groce is very active in the community. In addition to making countless appearances on behalf of the university and the mens Basketball Program he has taken part in several service projects benefiting local schools and organizations.
