Team History

The Akron Zips men’s Basketball team represents the University of Akron in Akron, Ohio. The team currently competes in the Mid-American Conference (MAC) as a Division I member of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). The Zips are currently coached by John Groce and play their home games at Rhodes Arena on the university’s campus. Prior to joining the MAC in 1992, Akron was a member of the Ohio Valley Conference (OVC).

Akron has appeared in eight NCAA Tournaments. Since 1992, every year except 1993, 2000, 2001, 2005, and 2008 has seen at least one MAC representative in the NCAA tournament In 1986, the Zips reached the Elite Eight before falling to Louisville 7367. They have also reached the Sweet Sixteen on three occasions: in 2009 as a 12 seed falling to Gonzaga 8481 OT; in 2013 as a 12 seed losing 6765 to Michigan; and most recently in 2017 as a 13 seed losing 9072 to hometown Dayton.

Akron has appeared in five National Invitation Tournaments (NIT), with an all-time record of 54 (.556). The Zips reached the NIT semifinals twice: first in 1979 where they lost conservation game to eventual champion Purdue 6360 after having beaten St. Joseph’s and Penn State second in 1986 after beating Pepperdine and Washington State before losing 7877 at home against eventual champion Ohio State

The Zips men’s basketball team represents the University of Akron in Akron, Ohio. The school’s team currently competes in the Mid-American Conference East Division. They have been members of the MAC East since the MAC began divisional play in 1997. The Zips have appeared in eight NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Tournaments They reached the round of 32 four times, in 1986, 2009, 2011, and 2013. In 1986, they defeated Pepperdine and lost to Louisville. In 2009, they defeated Temple before losing to Michigan State In 2011, they defeated Temple before losing to Notre Dame In 2013, they defeated VCU before losing to Michigan. The Zips also appeared in four consecutive National Invitation Tournaments from 2014 to 2017. They reached the semifinals in 2014 before losing to Florida State In 2015, they lost to Richmond in the first round; in 2016, they defeated Texas Tech before losing to Iowa State and in 2017

Prior to joining the MAC in 1992, they were members of the Ohio Valley Conference Since 1998, they have been coached by Keith Dambrot, who has led them to thirteen consecutive winning seasons, five regular season conference championships three conference tournament championships and three NCAA Tournament appearances.

The Zips men’s Basketball Program has a history dating back to 1902. Notable alumni include Nate Thurmond and Hall of Fame coach Jack Ramsey. since 1992, the team has played its home games at Rhodes Arena on The University of Akron campus About 1,400 seats were added prior to the 200102 season, giving the facility a total capacity of 5,500.

The Zips appeared in their first NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Tournament in 1986 as an at-large team. They have appeared in three NCAA Division I Tournaments since then; most recently as a 14th seed in 2009 where they lost to Gonzaga in the first round. In 1986, they defeated Notre Dame before losing to Memphis State in the second round; as a 15th seed in 1993, they lost to Arizona State in the first round; and as a fourteenth seed in 2009

The Zips men’s basketball team began play in 1901-1902 under Harold Fyfe with no official nickname and an 0-5 record. In only their second season, they beat a significantly more experienced Ohio State team 6-5, noteworthy as it was Ohio State’s first loss to an amateur opponent since 1896 and Akron’s first win against an established program.

In addition to winning 23 regular season MAC titles, Akron has won 12 MAC Tournament championships and participated in 12 NCAA Tournaments and five National Invitation Tournaments (NIT). Since joining the MAC in 1992, the Zips have appeared in 14 MAC tournament title games and won nine championships, having also won their Final Four game each time. Through six seasons (as of 2017), Akron has appeared more times in the MAC tournament title game than any other MAC team other than Kent State Golden Flashes men’s basketball who have made seven appearances total through 2017 as well..

They were runners up in the 1946 NIT, which was anxious year for the young tournament, as many of the nation’s best teams, such as Kentucky and Notre Dame refused to participate due to a pay-for-play scandal involving several Chicago-area teams and players.
