Why Alderson Broaddus baseball is a program on the rise
It’s been said that hitting is contagious. Well, so is winning.
The Alderson Broaddus baseball team is a perfect example of that as the program has seen a drastic turnaround over the last few years.
After posting a 9-41 record in 2016, the Battlers rebounded to win 28 games in 2017 and followed that up with a 35-win season in 2018.
AB has also made back-to-back appearances in the Mountain East conference tournament semifinals and placed second in the regular season standings this past year.
So, why has there been such a turnaround for Alderson Broaddus baseball?
Well, it all starts with Head Coach Bradigo Heath, who took over the program prior to the 2017 season. Heath, who is originally from Virginia, came to AB after serving as an Assistant Coach at his alma mater, Emory & Henry College.
In his two years at the helm of the Battlers’ program, Heath has compiled a 63-51 record and has guided AB to its first two MEC tournament appearances. He was also named the MEC Coach of the Year in 2018 after leading Alderson Broaddus to a 35-19 overall record and a 15-9 mark in conference play
But Heath isn’t the only reason for Alderson Broaddus’ recent success on the diamond.
The Battlers have also been led by some talented players over the last few years, including All-American catcher Chris Scalzo and All-MEC first baseman/designated hitter Cory Largent.
Scalzo, who was named an ABCA/Rawlings All-American earlier this month, finished his senior season hitting .402 with 12 home runs and 46 RBIs while Largent hit .383 with nine home runs and 54 RBIs en route to being named an All-MEC first team selection.
