Get to Know the Auburn Baseball Stats for the Upcoming Season
Contents
The Auburn baseball team is gearing up for another season and fans want to know what the stats for the team are.
Team Offense
Auburn’s team offense was ranked in the top half of the SEC last season, but they have some work to do if they want to move up in the standings. The Tigers led the SEC in batting average (.277), but they were near the bottom of the conference in runs scored (6.5 per game) and home runs (36).
One player who will be counted on to provide a spark on offense is junior infielder Will Holland. Holland was one of the top hitters in the SEC last season, batting .321 with 10 home runs and 39 RBI. He will be joined by sophomore outfielder Sam Hughes, who hit .273 with seven home runs and 30 RBI as a freshman.
If Auburn can find a way to score more runs, they could be a dangerous team in the SEC this season.
Team Pitching
Pitching is a critical element to any baseball teams success and the 2019 Auburn pitching staff appears to have what it takes to be one of the best in the nation. The team returns aces Casey Mize and Cole Lipscomb, who are both Preseason All-Americans. They are joined by weekend starters Davis Daniel and Tanner Burns, who both have the potential to be draft picks in the 2019 MLB Draft The bullpen looks to be deep with experience and will be anchored by senior closer Calvin Houck.
Catcher’s ERA
One of the most important stats for any Baseball Team is the catcher’s ERA. This stat measures how well the catcher works with the pitchers and helps to prevent runs from being scored. The Auburn baseball team has a strong showing in this area, with a catcher’s ERA of 3.38. This means that the team is likely to have a lot of success this season.
Fielding Percentage
Fielding percentage is a baseball statistic that measures the percentage of times a Defensive Player correctly handles a batted or thrown ball. The formula for calculating fielding percentage is:
[(Putouts + Assists) / (Putouts + Assists + Errors)] x 100
For example, if a first baseman has 150 putouts, 30 assists, and 10 errors in 200 total chances, his fielding percentage would be calculated as follows:
[(150 + 30) / (150 + 30 + 10)] x 100 = .950 x 100 = 95.0%
A high fielding percentage is an indicator of a good Defensive Player
Home Runs
Home Runs are always a popular stat to track in baseball. They are often the highlight of the game, and can change the momentum of a game in an instant. The Auburn Tigers have hit 112 home runs so far this season, which is good for second in the SEC. The leader in home runs is Texas A&M with 115.
The Tigers have been led by junior second baseman Will Holland, who has hit 14 home runs so far this season. Holland is followed closely by senior outfielder Jonah Todd, who has hit 12 home runs The rest of the team has combined for 86 home runs
Auburn’s opponents have hit 95 home runs against the Tigers this season. The most by any one team was Alabama, who hit 12 home runs in their three-game series against Auburn. LSU and Arkansas each hit 11 home runs against Auburn, while Ole Miss and Missouri each hit 10.
Strikeouts
In baseball, a strikeout occurs when a pitcher throws three strikes to a batter during his at bat. Strikeouts are an important part of the game and can be used as a defensive strategy by the pitcher and his team. The more strikeouts a team has, the more likely they are to win the game.
Auburn had a total of 973 strikeouts last season, which ranked them 14th in the nation. Their Strikeout rate was 23.3%, which was also 14th in the nation. The team’s leading strikeouts per nine innings pitcher was Casey Mize, who had 13.2 strikeouts per nine innings pitched
Some of the other top pitchers on the team include Keegan Thompson (10.5), Davis Daniel (9.4), and Andrew Mitchell (8.9). All three of these pitchers will be back for Auburn this season and will look to help lead the team to another successful season
Wins
In baseball, a win is credited to the pitcher who is the starting pitcher when his team takes and maintains the lead for the remainder of the game, provided that his team wins. If a starting pitcher leaves the game but his team still holds the lead, he is not credited with a win, but rather a no-decision.
Losses
The Auburn baseball team had a great season last year, but they ultimately fell short of their goal of winning the World Series
This year, they’ll be looking to Bounce Back and return to the top of the standings. To do that, they’ll need to improve upon some key statistics from last season.
One area that they’ll be looking to improve is their record in games where they score fewer than four runs. Last season, they were 12-19 in such games. If they can turn even a few of those losses into wins, it will go a long way towards helping them achieve their goal.
Similarly, they’ll also be looking to reduce the number of losses in one-run games. Last year, they were 7-9 in such games. Again, even a few more wins in close games could make a big difference in their standings.
Finally, the team will also be looking to cut down on earned runs Last year, they allowed 48 unearned runs, which was tied for second most in the league. If they can tighten up their defense and allow fewer unearned runs, it will go a long way towards helping them win more games.
Save Opportunities
A save (abbreviated SV or S) is awarded to a relief pitcher who finishes a game for the winning team under certain prescribed circumstances. The number of saves, or percentage of save opportunities converted, is a common statistic used to evaluate Relief pitchers It became an official Major League Baseball (MLB) statistic in 1969.
There are different situations that warrant awards of saves in MLB. A relief pitcher earns a save by entering the game in a situation where the tying run is on base, at bat or on deck; and finishing the game without allowing the tying run to score. If he does not finish the game but his team still has the lead, he gets credited with a hold.
Comeback Wins
Under Coach Butch Thompson, the Auburn Baseball Team has had several key comeback wins.
In 2016, the team had a total of 12 come-from-behind victories, which is the most in a season since 2000.
In 2017, the team had 11 comeback wins, including a 7-6 walk-off win against top-ranked Florida.
And in 2018, the team had 9 comeback victories, highlighted by an 8-7 win in 10 innings against Clemson in the ACC tournament
The team’s come-from-behind victories are a reflection of its never-give-up attitude. So even if the game is close, don’t count Auburn out – they have proven time and again that they can come from behind to win.
