The Team’s History

The Augsburg Mens Hockey team has been a staple in the world of college hockey since the late 1970s. The team has seen its share of success, but has also gone through some hard times. However, the team is currently on the rise and is looking to make a name for itself in the world of college hockey

The team was founded in 1978 and made its debut in the 1979-80 season. The team’s first coach was Jim Chuck, who would lead the team for its first four seasons. The team’s first game was against Concordia College which they lost 5-2. The team’s first win came against St. Thomas, which they won 9-0.

The team’s first couple seasons were rocky, as they only won a handful of games each year. However, things began to turn around for the team in the 1981-82 season, as they finished with a record of 17-11-0. This was the beginning of a stretch of success for the team, as they would go on to make the playoffs in each of the next four seasons.

During this stretch of success, the team saw some of its best players come through its ranks. Players like Todd Klindt, Jason Blake, and Chris McAllister all played key roles on the teams that made deep runs in the playoffs. However, perhaps the most famous Auggie hockey player is current NHL head coach Bruce Boudreau. Boudreau played for Augsburg from 1977-1981 and is currently one of the most successful coaches in NHL history

Despite all this success, things took a turn for the worse for Augsburg hockey in the mid-1990s. The team went through a stretch of six straight seasons without making the playoffs and their overall record suffered as a result. This tough stretch came to an end in the 2001-02 season when Head Coach Steve Johnson took over and led them back to respectability.

Under Johnson’s leadership, Augsburg began to rebuild itself into a competitive Hockey Program once again. He led them back to the playoffs in his second season at helm, and they haven’t missed since then. In fact, since then Augsburg has become one of the premier programs in Division III hockey. They’ve won four conference championships and have made seven trips to the NCAA tournament under Johnson’s leadership
