The Stanley Cup is named after Lord Stanley of Preston, who was the Governor General of Canada from 1888 to 1893. The original Stanley Cup was donated by Lord Stanley in 1892 and it was first awarded to the Montreal Amateur Athletic Association (AAA) Hockey Club in 1893. The Montreal AAA were the first team to win the Stanley Cup and they went on to win it again in 1894.

The modern-day NHL was founded in 1917 and the first ever NHL championship was awarded to the Montreal Canadiens in 1918. The Canadiens have won a total of 24 Stanley Cups which is more than any other team in NHL history The Toronto Maple Leafs are second with 13 championships, followed by the Detroit Red Wings with 11 championships.

The most recent Stanley Cup champions are the St. Louis Blues who won their first ever championship in 2019.
