A Team on the Rise

The team’s success is due in large part to its strong pitching staff. The rotation features three seniors who have been key contributors to the team’s turnaround. Ace starter Mark Johnson has been nearly unhittable this season, compiling a 6-1 record with a 0.96 ERA. He has been backed up by solid performances from Nick Liguori and Dan Schwartz.
The team’s offense has also been clicking on all cylinders lately. Senior third baseman Matt Stefanovic has been leading the way with a .373 batting average five home runs and 20 RBIs. He is joined by a cast of capable hitters including shortstop Mike Nemeth, second baseman Steve dispaldo, and first baseman Connor Enright.
With a strong core of experienced players leading the way, Augustana Baseball looks poised to make a run at a conference championship in the coming years.

The team has continued to build on that success in 2018, starting the season with a 20-5 record. They are currently ranked No. 2 in the country and are looking like a team that could make another deep run in the postseason.

The Turning Point
Augustana baseball has been on the rise in recent years The team has made the playoffs in four of the last five seasons, including a trip to the College World Series in 2016.
What has been the turning point for the program?
Head coach Tim Huber credits the team’s success to a change in culture.
“We’ve really changed the culture here,” Huber said. “Our guys expect to win now. They believe they can win every game.”
Huber said that the team’s success starts with recruiting. The Coaching Staff is always looking for players who are not only talented, but also have the right mindset and work ethic.
“We want guys who are passionate about baseball and who are willing to work hard,” Huber said. “That’s what we’ve been able to find, and it’s been a big part of our success.”
The Augustana baseball program is certainly one to watch in the coming years. With a strong foundation in place, the sky is the limit for this team.
The Road to Redemption
After a disappointing 2018 campaign in which the Augustana Vikings went 17-26 overall and 7-17 in the NSIC, head coach Tim Huber knew changes needed to be made. He wasted no time in putting his stamp on the program, bringing in 10 new players to augment the returners. The result has been a team that is 22-15 overall and 11-11 in conference play as of April 25th, good for 4th place in the NSIC South. They have already surpassed their win total from last year with 5 regular season games remaining.
This turnaround can be attributed to several factors. First and foremost has been an improvement on the mound. The team’s earned run average has dropped from 5.73 to 4.57, while the opponents’ batting average against has gone from .302 to .271. The pitchers have also been much better at limiting free passes, going from 4.8 walks per 9 innings last year to 3.7 this season.
The defense has also been significantly better, committing just 33 errors in 37 games compared to 63 errors in 43 games last year. This has resulted in a decrease in earned runs allowed from 3.88 per game to 2.68 per game.
Perhaps the biggest reason for the Vikings’ success this season has been an offense that is averaging 6.1 runs per game, up from 4.4 last year. The team is hitting .287/.358/.452 as a whole, led by sophomore infielder Brady Stover (.341/.430/.568) and junior outfielder Jared Lewis (.333/.393/.542).
With 5 regular season games remaining, the Augustana Vikings are poised to make a run at an NSIC title and a berth in the NCAA Division II Midwest Regional Tournament

The team has also gotten great contributions from its young players Freshmenpitchers Tanner Olson and Jack Sorenson have both been key members of the pitching staff, while sophomore infielder Easton Walker has been one of the team’s best hitters.
