History

Basketball is a relatively new sport, having been invented in 1891. However, it didn’t take long for the game to catch on, and by the early 1900s, it was being played all over the country.

The first college basketball game was played in 1897 between Yale and Penn, and by the 1920s, there were hundreds of colleges and universities playing the game.

The first Professional Basketball league was founded in 1898, but it wasn’t until the early 1950s that professional basketball really took off. In 1946, the Basketball Association of America (BAA) was founded, and three years later, it merged with the National Basketball League (NBL) to form the National Basketball Association (NBA).

Bangor high school fielded its first basketball team in 1903. The team was very successful, winning the state championship in 1903-04 and again in 1904-05.

In 1906-07, Bangor joined forces with two other high schools to form the Eastern Maine Intercollegiate Basketball league The league lasted for two seasons before disbanding.

Bangor high school didn’t field a Basketball team during the 1911-12 season due to a lack of interest from students. But the team was back on the court in 1912-13 and would go on to win four more state championships over the next decade.

The Program

The men’s Basketball Program at Bangor University is one of the most successful in the country. The team has won four National Championships and has been to the NCAA tournament nine times. The program has also produced two NBA players Andrew Bogut and Kobe Bryant

The Team

The Bangor basketball team is made up of 46 athletes, all of whom are dedicated to representing the school and the community with pride. The team includes both Boys and Girls ranging in age from 14 to 18. Each member of the team brings their own unique skills and abilities to the court, making Bangor a force to be reckoned with on the hardwood.
