The History of BC Baseball

Since its founding in 1859, Boston College baseball has been one of the most successful programs in the country. The Eagles have won 25 conference championships and made 12 NCAA tournament appearances, including a trip to the College World Series in 1967.

BC has produced many Major League Baseball players, including Hall of Famer Roberto Clemente and All-Stars Pete Runnels, Dick Radatz, and Mike Timlin. The Eagles have also had success at the collegiate level, winning the Big East Tournament five times and the NCAA Regional Tournament three times.

Under Head Coach Mike Gambino, BC has become one of the top programs in the country once again. The Eagles have made four straight trips to the NCAA Tournament and won the Big East tournament in 2013 and 2016. With a talented group of players returning for the 2017 season, BC is poised for another strong year.

The Evolution of BC Baseball

Boston college baseball has come a long way since its humble beginnings in the late nineteenth century The program has gone through many changes in its more than one hundred years of existence, and it has consistently been one of the top programs in the country.

The team got its start in 1892, when a group of students formed a club team. The team was officially recognized by the school in 1896 and began competing against other collegiate teams. The early years were tough for the young program, as the team struggled to find consistent success.

In the early twentieth century, the program began to take off. The team won its first conference championship in 1903 and followed that up with back-to-back titles in 1904 and 1905. The team also won championships in 1908, 1910, 1912, 1913, and 1914. After a few down years, the team won another Conference Championship in 1919.

The 1920s were a decade of success for BC baseball. The team won conference championships in 1923, 1924, 1925, 1926, 1927, 1929, and 1930. The team also made its first appearance in the College World Series in 1930, where they finished as runner-up.

The 1930s were more of the same for BC baseball. The team won conference championships in 1932, 1933, 1934, 1935, 1936, 1937, 1938, and 1939. The team also made back-to-back appearances in the College World Series in 1938 and 1939, finishing as runner-up both times.

After a few down years during World War II, BC baseball returned to prominence in the 1950s. The team won conference championshipsin 1950 ,1952 ,1953 ,1954 ,1955 ,1956 ,and 1957 .The team also made back-to-back appearances in the College World Seriesin 1956 and 1957 ,finishing as runner-up both times .
In 1963 ,the Eagles finally broke through and won their first National Championship .They would go on to win another national title in 1967 .The 1960s were a golden age for BC baseball ,with the team winning eight conference championships and two national titles .

The BC Baseball Dynasty

The Boston College Eagles baseball team has been one of the most successful programs in NCAA Division I baseball over the last two decades. Under the guidance of head coach Mike Gambino, the Eagles have won four Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) championships and made six appearances in the College World Series BC has also produced thirty-seven MLB Draft picks since 2000, including fourteen in the first three rounds.

The Eagles have been especially dominant since joining the ACC in 2005. In fifteen seasons, they have won nine conference championships, made eleven NCAA tournament appearances, and advanced to the College World Series four times. They have also been ranked #1 in the nation several times.

BC has become known for its strong pitching staffs, led by pitchers like Justin Glass (’16), who was named ACC Pitcher of the Year in 2016, and Ian York (’17), who was a finalist for the Golden Spikes Award which is given to the nation’s top amateur baseball player

The Eagles have also had great success recruiting top talent from around the country. In recent years they have landed highly-touted prospects like Blake Butera (’18), Matt Gillies (’19), and Chris Newell (’20). With a mix of experienced veterans and talented newcomers, BC should continue to be one of the best teams in college baseball for years to come.

Every member of the coaching staff brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to the team. LaCava has over 25 years of experience coaching baseball including two World Series appearances with the Toronto Blue Jays assistant coaches Ramon LeBron, Manny Martinez, and Fredi Gonzalez have all played professional baseball and Martinez and Gonzalez have also coached at the MLB level.
