The History of BGSU Baseball

The BGSU baseball team has a rich history dating back to the early 1900s. The program has produced many Great players over the years, including future Major League Baseball stars like Mike Piazza and Jay Buhner.

In recent years the team has undergone a resurgence, becoming one of the most competitive programs in the Mid-American Conference. Under Head Coach Danny Schmitz, the Falcons have won two conference championships and made two appearances in the NCAA tournament

The Current Team

The BGSU baseball team is currently in the process of rebuilding. The team has had some success in recent years but is looking to take the next step and become a contender in their conference. The Current team is led by a core group of players that have been with the program for a couple of years. The Coaching Staff

The staff is made up of three full-time assistant coaches and a volunteer assistant. Head coach Danny Schroeder is in his fourth season at BGSU. He has led the team to a conference championship and three NCAA Tournament appearances. Tim Slater is the pitching coach and he is entering his third season with the Falcons. Coach Schroeder and Coach Slater both played baseball at BGSU. Steve Frye is the hitting coach and he is entering his second season with the Falcons. He played minor League Baseball for four years before becoming a coach. The volunteer Assistant Coach is Mike Miller He has been coaching for over 20 years and has been a part of two Conference Championship teams.

The Facilities

While the team has seen better days, the facilities are among the best in Division I Baseball The on-campus Shafer Park, built in 1978, underwent a $3 million renovation in 1998 and features quaint seating for 500 bleacher fans and a large press box. The dugouts were also upgraded and outfield fences moved in to create a more intimate playing environment.

The Fans

As the saying goes, “you can’t please all of the people all of the time.” The same is true of BGSU baseball. The team has had its share of highs and lows over the years, but one thing has remained constant: the fans.

BGSU baseball fans are some of the most passionate and loyal in the country. They travel far and wide to support their team, and they are always ready to cheer them on to victory.
