Bologna Basketball: A History

Bologna Basketball, also known as Virtus Bologna is an Italian Professional Basketball Club based in Bologna, Emilia-Romagna. The club was founded in 1929 by a group of local students. It is one of the oldest clubs in Italy. Virtus Bologna has won seventeen Italian League championships, three EuroLeague championships, one FIBA Intercontinental Cup, and one FIBA Saporta Cup. The team plays its home games at the 12,000 seat PalaDozza arena.

Basketball was first introduced to Italy in 1920 by an American physical education teacher, who organized a game in Milan between squads from the YMCA and local students. Basketball quickly caught on and soon there were leagues springing up all over the country.

In 1929, a group of students from the University of Bologna founded Virtus Rugby Bologna, which soon expanded to include a basketball team The new team made its debut in the 1930-31 season of the Second Division (now Serie A2), placing second in their division and thus qualifying for the playoffs. They would go on to win their division in 1931-32 and make it all the way to the Championship game before losing to Olimpia Milano

Virtus Rugby Bologna changed its name to Virtus Pallacanestro Bologna following World War II. The name change was necessary because rugby was not as popular as it once was and basketball was now the primary sport played by the club.

Virtus reached the height of its success in the late 1980s and early 1990s under Head Coach Valerio Bianchini. That era saw some of the greatest players in club history put on a Virtus jersey, including Giuseppe Giergia, Roberto Premieri, Stefano Rusconi, Andrea Meneghin, Rimantas Kaukenas, Andrea Bargnani, and Manu Ginobili. With those players leading the way, Virtus won six Italian League championships (1986-87, 1987-88, 1988-89, 1989-90 1990-91) and three EuroLeague championships (1988 , 1998 , 2001).

In recent years Virtus has struggled to return to that level of success but remains one of Italy’s most prestigious basketball clubs.

The Early Years

The Post-Golden Era

The Post-Golden Era is the era in which Bologna Basketball Club won their ninth and tenth consecutive Italian Championships, from 1983 to 1985. After winning the Championship in 1982, Bologna went on to win the European Champions Cup in 1983. They then successfully defended their European title in 1984. In 1985, they won their tenth consecutive Italian Championship, making them the first and only team to do so in the history of Italian basketball

However, following this golden era of success, Bologna Basketball Club then went into decline. They failed to win any silverware between 1986 and 1991. In 1992, they were relegated from the first division of Italian basketball for the first time in their history. They then bounced back up to the first division in 1993 and have remained there ever since. However, they have not come close to replicating their earlier successes and have only won one further Italian Championship, in 2000.

The modern ERA

In the modern era, Bologna’s Basketball team has been one of the most consistent in Italy. They have won the Italian championship 8 times, and the European cup twice. They have also been runners up in both competitions several times. Bologna has a long rivalry with fellow Italian Basketball powerhouse Treviso, which has often resulted in some heated games between the two teams.
