The history of Brown hockey

Brown hockey has a long and storied history dating back to the late 1800s. The team has won numerous conference and National Championships and produced a number of Olympians and professional players. Today, Brown hockey is a Division I program competing in the Ivy League

The Brown Hockey program was established in 1892, making it one of the oldest college hockey programs in the country. The team played its first game against Yale University, losing 2-1. over the next few years, the team had mixed success, but by the turn of the century, Brown had established itself as a top program.

The early 1900s saw Brown win its first conference championship in 1903 and followed that up with another title in 1904. The team also made its first appearance in the National Tournament in 1904, reaching the semifinals before losing to Yale.

The next few decades were very successful for Brown hockey. The team won 13 conference championships between 1910 and 1949. During this time, Brown also had success in the National Tournament making three trips to the semifinals and one appearance in the finals.

In recent years Brown has continued to be a competitive program at both the conference and national levels. The team has won four conference championships since 1990 and made three trips to the NCAA tournament most recently in 2013.

The Brown Hockey Program today

The Brown Hockey program today is marked by a tradition of excellence that has spanned over a century. The team has won an Ivy League championship every year since its inception in 1901, and has captured 28 national championships – more than any other school in the country.

The Bears compete in one of the most competitive conferences in the nation, the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC), which features some of the best teams in the country. Brown has won 13 ECAC championships, more than any other team in the conference.

The team is currently coached by Mike Lynch, who is in his 22nd season at the helm of the program. Under Lynch’s leadership, the Bears have won eight Ivy League championships and made 12 appearances in the NCAA Tournament

The Brown hockey program has a rich history of producing NHL players including current stars Ryan Miller (Buffalo Sabres) and Brian Gionta (Boston Bruins). More than 30 Brown hockey alumni have gone on to play in the NHL, including Jeff Halpern, who captained the Washington Capitals from 2006 to 2008.

The team has made 27 appearances in the NCAA tournament and has won five conference championships. Brown is also one of only four schools to have both its men’s and women’s Hockey teams ranked in the top 20 of the NCAA Division I polls.

The team plays its home games at the Meehan Auditorium, which is located on the campus of Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island The arena seats 3,200 fans and is one of the oldest arenas in college hockey having been built in 1926.

The team is currently coached by Brendan Whittet, who is entering his seventh season as Head Coach Under his leadership, the team has had six winning seasons and has made four appearances in the NCAA tournament

Brown hockey has long been a tradition of excellence in the Beanpot, one of the most prestigious college hockey tournaments in the country. The Bears have won the tournament a record 13 times, most recently in 2019. They have also finished as runners-up 11 times.

Brown has had a number of Great players over the years, including Hobey Baker Award winner Chris Drury and John Mitchell, who is the All-time leading scorer in Beanpot history. Mitchell led the Bears to back-to-back titles in 2006 and 2007.

Under head coach Brendan Whittet, Brown has become one of the top teams in NCAA Division I hockey. The Bears have made four appearances in the NCAA Tournament under Whittet, including a trip to the Frozen Four in 2014.
