Since the 1920s, basketball has been a significant part of the Canton community. The game was invented by Dr. James Naismith who was born in Almonte, Ontario. It was originally played with a Soccer Ball and two peach baskets as goals. Basketball quickly became popular in the United States and by the early 1900s, it was being played in Canada as well.
The first Canadian basketball game was played in 1904 at McGill University in Montreal. McGill students challenged Harvard University to a game, which Harvard won 9-3. However, basketball didn’t gain widespread popularity in Canada until after World War I.
In the 1920s, there were only a handful of teams and most were based in eastern Canada. In Ontario, there were teams in Ottawa, Kingston, Toronto and Oshawa; in Quebec, teams existed in Montreal and Sherbrooke; and in Nova Scotia, teams were based out of Halifax and Truro. There were also teams located in New Brunswick and Newfoundland, but these were not as competitive as the other provinces.
Canton had its first organized basketball team in 1922. The team members were all students at Canton high school and they played their games on an outdoor court behind the school. They were coached by Mr. E.B Potter and their captain was Robert McCollum. The team entered into the St Lawrence County League and won their first League Championship that year.
Canton’s basketball team has always been a source of community pride. In the 1930s, they won nine consecutive league championships; from 1949 to 1953 they made it to the New York State semifinals five times; and from 1957 to 1959 they won three straight State Championships – an unprecedented feat for any school at that time. The success of the basketball team has continued into recent years with several playoff appearances and one sectional championship win
