The history of the Cincinnati Adult Baseball League
The Cincinnati Adult Baseball League (CABA) is the oldest continuously operated adult Baseball League in the United States It was founded in 1909 and currently consists of 12 teams. The league is affiliated with the Greater Cincinnati amateur baseball Association (GCABL) and plays its games at various parks throughout the Greater Cincinnati area.
The league began with four teams – the Hamilton A’s, Middletown Redmen, Norwood Boosters and Springdale Sox. The first game was played on April 17, 1909 at Crosley Field, home of the Cincinnati Reds The Hamilton A’s won the first game, 5-4.
Over the years, the league has seen many changes. In its early years, most of the teams were sponsored by local businesses but that began to change in the 1960s as many of the teams became sponsored by local bars. In recent years several teams have dropped their sponsorships altogether and have gone back to being known by their city or town name.
The league has also seen a change in its demographics over the years. In its early years, it was mostly made up of white players but that began to change in the 1970s as more and more black players began joining the league. Today, the league is made up of players of all races and backgrounds.
