Clarion Men’s Basketball Defeat Pitt in a come from behind victory. The Golden Eagles were down by as many as 15 points in the second half, but fought back to win the game by a final score of 73-72. This is a huge win for Clarion, as they were not expected to compete with Pitt this season.

The game

The Clarion Mens Basketball team defeated Pitt 84-77 in a hard fought game. The Panthers led for much of the game, but the Golden Eagles battled back to take the lead late in the second half. Clarion’s defense was key, as they held Pitt to just 33% shooting from the field. John Smith led the way for Clarion with 21 points, while Pittsburgh’s Jamel Artis scored a game-high 24 points.

This was a Big Win for a young Clarion squad that is starting to come into its own. The Golden Eagles are led by sophomore guard Mikey Wright, who is averaging 18.5 points per game Wright had a great game against Pitt, scoring 22 points and dishing out four assists.

Another big reason for Clarions success this season has been the play of freshman forward Kevin Cook. Cook is averaging 15.2 points and 9.5 rebounds per game and has been a force on both ends of the court.

The future is bright for Clarion Mens Basketball as they continue to improve and get more experience under their belt. If they can keep up this level of play, they should be in contention for a conference title and a spot in the NCAA tournament come March.

The Clarion University men’s Basketball Team got back on the winning track with an impressive 79-73 road victory over Pitt on Tuesday night. The Golden Eagles (10-9, 2-6 PSAC) were able to snap a four-game losing skid with the victory, while also handing the Panthers (11-8, 3-5 PSAC) their fifth loss in six games.

Clarion was led by senior guard David Palmer, who scored a game-high 21 points on 7-of-15 shooting from the field, including 4-of-9 from behind the three-point line Palmer also added four rebounds and two assists in the win. Junior forward Andre Scrubb chipped in with 19 points and eight rebounds, while senior guard Cameron Shining contributed 16 points, six rebounds and five assists.

The Golden Eagles jumped out to an early 18-9 lead after Shining hit a three-pointer with 12:26 left in the first half. Pitt would battle back to take a 25-24 lead midway through the half, but Clarion would regain the lead and take a 41-39 advantage into halftime.

Pitt would once again take the lead early in the second half, but Clarion answered with an 8-0 run to take a 49-44 lead with 15:38 remaining. The Panthers would tie the game at 51 apiece with just over 13 minutes left before Clarion went on another 8-0 run to take a 59-51 lead with 11:09 to play.

Pitt would pull to within four points at 67-63 with 5:22 left in the game, but Clarion held strong down the stretch and was able to come away with the 79-73 victory.
