How the Coyote women’s basketball team has improved in recent years
It’s no secret that the South Dakota State women’s Basketball team has struggled in recent years But under the leadership of Head Coach Dawn Plitzuweit, the team has shown gradual improvement.
In Plitzuweit’s first season at the helm, the Coyotes went 10-20 overall and 3-13 in Summit League play. But by her third season, the team had reached new heights, finishing with a 20-12 overall record and 12-6 mark in conference play The team also made its first ever appearance in the Summit League Tournament Championship game
And this past season, the Coyotes took another step forward, finishing 25-8 overall and 14-4 in conference play The team also won its first ever Summit League regular season title and made its first ever NCAA tournament appearance.
So what has been the key to the Coyote’s turnaround?
For one, Plitzuweit has been able to recruit some talented players to Brookings. In recent years she has brought in players like Macy Miller, Madison Guebert and Myah Selland who have all become key contributors for the team.
But more importantly, Plitzuweit has instilled a winning culture within the program. After years of futility, the Coyote women’s basketball team is finally on the rise. And under Plitzuweit’s leadership, there is no doubt that they will continue to improve in the years to come.

The headliner of the class is point guard Jailyn McMahon, who is ranked as the No. 11 point guard in the nation by ESPN McMahon is a dynamic playmaker with good size and athleticism. She should be able to step into a starting role right away and make an impact for the Coyotes.
Forward Claire Coggins is another top recruit in the class. She’s ranked as the No. 53 forward in the nation by ESPN and brings a lot of size and strength to the court. Coggins is a very good rebounder and should be able to contribute right away for the Coyotes.
